Essential Tips for Cold Winter Months

Hot tubs are built for Canadian winters — that is part of the point. But there are a handful of habits that make the difference between a tub that runs effortlessly all season and one that costs more to heat, develops problems, or gives you trouble when temperatures drop hard. None of these are complicated. They are the things that experienced hot tub owners do without thinking about it.

Check the cover seal before the cold sets in

The cover is the single biggest factor in how much energy your tub uses in winter. A well-sealing cover traps the heat you already paid to generate. A cover with worn seals, a waterlogged foam core, or a broken latch lets that heat escape continuously — the heater runs longer, your bill goes up, and the water temperature may start dropping despite the heater running.

Before the cold season, run your hands along the edge of the cover while the tub is at temperature. If you feel warm air escaping anywhere, the seal has failed. Check the Power Clamps on each corner — these hold the cover tight to the cabinet lip and are the last line of defence against heat loss. Make sure they latch firmly and the cover sits flat.

A waterlogged cover is heavier than it should be and has absorbed moisture into the foam core, which dramatically reduces its insulating value. If your cover has gained weight significantly over time, replacement is the right call — a new cover pays back its cost in reduced heating bills.

Keep the water level in the correct range

Water expands slightly when it is warm. In winter conditions, a tub that is overfilled can overflow when the jets run and the water level rises, and that water immediately freezes on the cabinet and deck around it. Keep the water level at the manufacturer's recommended range — typically midway up the filter housing — and check it after heavy use.

On the other end, a tub that is low on water runs the risk of the pump cavitating (pulling air instead of water), which stresses the pump and can cause a high-temperature fault. In very cold conditions, exposed equipment above the waterline is also more vulnerable to freezing if there is a power issue. Top up the water if it has dropped more than a few centimetres below the normal level.

Keep air intakes closed while soaking

Most hot tubs have air intake controls — either a valve on the jets themselves or a dedicated air intake adjustment — that let you increase the air-to-water ratio in the jet stream. In summer, blasting extra air through the jets is great. In winter, you are pulling freezing-cold outside air into the water and working against the heater.

Keep the air intakes closed or minimized during winter soaks. The jets will still have good pressure from the pump — the air addition is not necessary for jet function, just for feel. The result is warmer water in the jet stream and less work for the heater during and after your soak.

Turn off the jets when you are not using the tub

This one surprises some new owners. Leaving the jets running when nobody is in the tub serves no purpose and actively cools the water by circulating it against cold air. The filtration system runs independently of the jets — the water is still being filtered and circulated by the pump even when the jets are off. There is no benefit to leaving jets running overnight or when the tub is unoccupied.

Most Eco Spa tubs with the Gecko Y series control run a low-speed circulation cycle automatically to maintain water quality. This is the background mode your tub is in when not actively in use. It keeps everything running without the energy cost of full jet operation.

Power Outage Protocol

If you lose power for more than a few hours in extreme cold, call us. At –25°C and below, unheated water in pipes and equipment can begin to freeze. An Eco Spa's full-foam insulation buys time, but it is not indefinite protection. Do not drain the tub yourself in an emergency without guidance — draining incorrectly in cold weather can leave water in lines and fittings where it will freeze and crack them.

Inspect for leaks before temperatures drop hard

A small leak that is merely inconvenient in fall becomes a serious problem in deep winter. Water seeping from a fitting or jet body can freeze overnight and crack the fitting, turning a minor repair into a major one. Before sustained cold weather arrives, do a visual inspection around the cabinet base and underneath if accessible. Any wet spots, mineral staining, or soft spots in the cabinet exterior are worth investigating while the ground is still above freezing and repairs are straightforward.

Maintain your water chemistry through winter

Water chemistry does not take a break in winter. If anything, it needs more attention in the cold months because evaporation rates change, bather loads may fluctuate, and cold weather can affect how quickly some chemicals dissolve. Keep testing on your regular weekly rhythm, balance pH to 7.2–7.8, and sanitize as usual.

One winter-specific note: shocking the water (adding a larger dose of chlorine or a non-chlorine oxidizer) after heavy bather use is worth doing year-round but matters especially in winter when the tub may be used more frequently by more people over holiday gatherings. Do not assume that cold weather means the sanitizer has to work less hard.

A hot tub that runs well through a Prairie winter is one with a sealing cover, correct water level, air intakes closed during soaking, jets off between uses, and a pre-season leak check.
