Heating Your 110V Hot Tub: Choosing the Right Heater

A 110V hot tub is the easiest entry point into hot tub ownership — plug it into a standard 15-amp outdoor outlet and you are running. But the heater inside that tub is doing real work, and in a Canadian winter, the quality of the heater and the control system behind it makes the difference between a tub that holds temperature comfortably and one that can't keep up.

Why 110V heating is harder than it sounds

A standard 110V outlet delivers about 1,500 watts of power at 15 amps. A typical hot tub heater draws the full 1,000 to 1,500 watts. That leaves little or nothing for the pump at the same time, which is why most 110V tubs run the heater and pump on a shared circuit — you cannot heat and jet simultaneously at full power.

In Alberta or Saskatchewan in February, ambient temperatures can sit at –20°C or lower for days at a time. A 110V tub with poor insulation will lose heat faster than its heater can replace it. The tub reaches a stalemate: it never shuts off, runs the heater almost continuously, and the water temperature drifts down toward 36°C or lower instead of holding at 38–40°C. This is not a heater problem — it is an insulation problem that the heater takes the blame for.

What makes a heater reliable: the incoloy element

The heater element is the part that actually warms the water. The best elements are made from incoloy, a nickel-iron-chromium alloy specifically engineered for wet-environment heating applications. Incoloy resists corrosion from chlorinated water far better than stainless steel, and it tolerates the repeated thermal cycling of heating and cooling without degrading quickly.

A quality incoloy element in a well-maintained tub will last many years. Cheaper elements use lower grades of stainless steel that pit, corrode, and fail faster, especially in water with chemistry that runs slightly acidic or with higher mineral content. If you are comparing 110V tubs, ask specifically what the heater element material is. "Stainless" is not a single specification — incoloy is worth paying for.

The control system: Gecko Y series

Convertible 110V/220V: the practical advantage

Eco Spas tubs are wired to run on either 110V or 220V. This is one of the most useful features for a 110V buyer, even if you have no immediate plans to upgrade the power.

On 110V, the tub runs the heater on the same circuit as the pump, which is the standard 110V trade-off. On 220V (a dedicated 30-amp or 50-amp circuit installed by an electrician), the heater and pump run independently, giving you simultaneous heating and full jet power. Heating is noticeably faster and temperature recovery after a soak is quicker.

For most owners in a milder season or a sheltered location, 110V is perfectly adequate. For those in cold exposed locations, or anyone who upgrades their outdoor electrical later, the conversion is straightforward — same tub, same heater, different circuit. You do not need to buy a new tub to get 220V performance.

The Real Cold-Climate Factor

In an Alberta winter, the heater is only half the equation. A tub with R-40 foam insulation and a well-sealing hard cover holds temperature between soaks with minimal heater run time. A tub with thin insulation runs its heater nearly continuously and still loses ground. Heater quality matters — but insulation is what makes a 110V tub genuinely viable at –30°C.

Insulation: where the real cold-climate work happens

At –20°C, a tub with a properly sealing R-40 cover and full foam insulation can hold temperature overnight with relatively short heater cycles. A tub with a thin foam cover that has lost its seal — or one with minimal cabinet insulation — runs its heater for much longer to achieve the same result, driving up the power bill and shortening the heater's service life.

When shopping for a 110V tub for Canadian winter use, ask for the cover's R-value and whether the cabinet is fully foamed. These are the numbers that determine whether the tub is actually practical in your climate.
